Division of English and Foreign Languages

The Division of English and Foreign Languages provides year-round intensive courses in English Language and foreign languages such as Japanese Language, French Language and Korean Language at various levels.

English Language Courses

Different levels of English Language courses are offered to help students improve their English language skills and communication techniques. The courses aim to help students to develop and improve their vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English Language from foundation to advanced level. 

The courses offered in the Diploma programmes are as follows:

AHEL1083 English Language

Students are exposed to the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, as well as a basic foundation in grammar and vocabulary to enhance their language proficiency and enable them to cope with their studies in English at tertiary level.

AHEL2043 English for Communication

Students are taught the essential communication and writing skills, as well as appropriate vocabulary, grammar and comprehension skills to enable them to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

AHEL3013 English for IELTS

Students are exposed to all the four core language skills in both formal and informal situations in academic and non-academic settings that will enable them to achieve a sound language competency to cope with their studies in English at tertiary level and develop their language skills to achieve a minimum level of Band 5.5 in IELTS.

The courses offered in the Bachelor’s degree programmes are as follows:

BHEL1013 English Language

Students are taught the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, as well as a basic foundation in grammar and vocabulary to enhance their language proficiency.

BHEL1023 English for Communication

Students are exposed to communication and writing skills, as well as appropriate vocabulary, grammar and comprehension skills to enable them to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

BHEL2013 English for Management

Students are exposed to essential speaking and writing skills that are related to business and management contexts to enable them to function appropriately at the workplace.

BHEL2023 English for the Profession

Students are exposed to essential speaking and writing skills that are related to science and engineering contexts to enable them to function appropriately at the workplace.

BHEL2033 English for the Humanities

Students are exposed to essential speaking and writing skills that are related to social science and humanities contexts to enable them to function appropriately at the workplace.

Foreign Language Courses

Different levels of foreign language courses, which include Japanese Language, French Language and Korean Language, are offered to help students to acquire an additional language that will give them a competitive edge when they venture into the working world. These courses will help to develop and improve their vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the respective foreign languages from elementary to intermediate level.

Japanese Language

The Japanese Language courses offered in the Diploma programmes are as follows:

AELJ1113 Japanese Language I

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in Japanese Language at the elementary level to enable them to communicate in basic Japanese Language in a social environment.

AELJ2113 Japanese Language II

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in Japanese Language at the pre-intermediate level to further enhance their proficiency in Japanese Language that will enable them to communicate in basic Japanese Language in a social and work environment.

The Japanese Language courses offered in the Bachelor’s degree programmes are as follows:

BHJL1013 Japanese Language I

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in Japanese Language at the elementary level to enable them to communicate in basic Japanese Language in a social and work environment.

BHJL2013 Japanese Language II

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in Japanese Language at the pre-intermediate level to further enhance their proficiency in Japanese Language that will enable them to communicate in basic Japanese Language in a social and work environment.

BHJL3013 Japanese Language III

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in Japanese Language at the intermediate level to further hone their proficiency in Japanese Language that will enable them to communicate appropriately in Japanese Language in various situations.

French Language



The French Language courses offered in the Diploma programmes are as follows:

AELF1113 French Language I

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in French Language at the elementary level to enable them to communicate in basic French Language in a social environment.

AELF2113 French Language II

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in French Language at the pre-intermediate level to further enhance their proficiency in French Language that will enable them to communicate in basic French Language in a social and work environment.

The French Language courses offered in the Bachelor’s degree programmes are as follows:

BHFL1013 French Language I

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in French Language at the elementary level to enable them to communicate in basic French Language in a social environment.

BHFL2013 French Language II

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in French Language at the pre-intermediate level to further enhance their proficiency in French Language that will enable them to communicate in basic French Language in a social and work environment.

BHFL3013 French Language III

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in French Language at the intermediate level to further hone their proficiency in French Language that will enable them to communicate appropriately in French Language in various situations.

Korean Language (한국어)

The Korean Language courses offered in the Diploma programmes are as follows:

AHLK1113 Korean Language I

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in Korean Language at the elementary level to enable them to communicate in basic Korean Language in a social environment.

AHLK2113 Korean Language II

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in Korean Language at the pre-intermediate level to further enhance their proficiency in Korean Language that will enable them to communicate in basic Korean Language in a social and work environment.

The Korean Language courses offered in the Bachelor’s degree programmes are as follows:

BHKL1013 Korean Language I

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in Korean Language at the elementary level to enable them to communicate in basic Korean Language in a social environment.

BHKL2013 Korean Language II

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in Korean Language at the pre-intermediate level to further enhance their proficiency in Korean Language that will enable them to communicate in basic Korean Language in a social and work environment.

BHKL3013 Korean Language III

Students are exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and a foundation in grammar and vocabulary skills in Korean Language at the intermediate level to further hone their proficiency in Korean Language that will enable them to communicate appropriately in Korean Language in various situations.
