Research Centres in the Faculty of Applied Sciences

There are 3 research centres in FOAS as listed below. Members perform individual research, group research, collaborative research with individual researcher(s) from other Faculties, institution(s), statutory bodies or industry partner(s). Members provide consultancy or testing and analysis services using scientific instruments available in the laboratories based on the stipulated and approved guidelines and charges.

Activities include conducting or organizing research project, consultancy work, workshop, seminar, conference and any other relevant activities including publishing papers.

Location: Applied Science Laboratories at Block D, TAR UC Main Campus

i. Objectives

The Centre conducts BioScience, Food Science and Chemistry research activities, provides scientific instrumentation services and consultancy to other education or research institutions as well as for the industry and conducts trainings and workshops. It also serves as an incubator to explore new ideas and research, and to nurture new researchers.

The Research Centre aims to:

  • provide analysis services for external clients from the educational institutions, and relevant industry using currently available instrument.
  • conduct bioscience, food science and chemistry related research.
  • organize seminar and workshops in the areas of bioscience, food science and chemistry;
  • foster collaborative relationships with individuals, institutions and organizations and to establish long-term research activities;
  • train post-graduate and undergraduate students by enriching their research and community exposure.
ii. Vision Statement

To become active research centre for BioScience, Food Science and Chemistry related work, particularly with specialization in BioScience, Food Science and Chemistry related analysis and testing using scientific instrumentation.

(a) Centre for BioScience and Food Science Research

i. Objectives
  1. The Centre conducts Applied Physics, Embedded Systems and Control Systems related research activities.
  2. Provides applied physics, scientific instrumentation, embedded system and control design services, consultancy, training and workshops to other educational/research institutions and industries.
  3. To collaborate with industry on industrial projects.
ii. Vision Statement

To become an active and dynamic Applied Physics, Control Systems and Embedded System centre in carrying out research and applications development in the areas of applied physics and embedded system with the goal of solving scientific and engineering problem.

Research group activities:

  • Development of embedded system

Location: Sports and Exercise Laboratories DKS and Block C, TAR UC Main Campus

i. Objectives

The Centre conducts Sports and Exercise related research activities, provides scientific instrumentation services and consultancy to other education or research institutions as well as for the industry and to conduct trainings and workshops. It also serves as an incubator to explore new ideas and research, and to nurture new researchers.

The Centre aims to:

  • promote physical fitness and wellness through physical activities;
  • provide physical fitness and wellness tests and training as well as exercises guidelines in promoting health and enhancing performance;
  • organize talks, courses, workshops and conferences in sport and exercise science, sport coaching and  physical education;
  • conduct ‘brain-based motor learning’ programmes for children;
  • establish long-term research programmes on sport and exercise (including sport coaching, sport training, physical fitness and children development).
  • foster collaborative relationships with individuals, institutions and organizations to improve sport performance and physical performance;
  • train post-graduate and undergraduate students by enriching their research and community exposure.
ii. Vision Statement

This centre strives to combine, structure and integrate the elements of sport and exercise science into its activities and services to enhance the well-being of general public, children and athletes. Through the activities and services rendered, research activities will be undertaken on a co-ordinated, interdisciplinary and specialized basis, with the aim of publishing research results. 

To provide the services to the sport organizations, community and industries, hence enhancing the collaboration between the University College and the external institutions and further strengthening the expertise building within the existing faculty members.

Centre for Sports and Exercise Science Research (CSER)

Activities include:

  • Provide services on physical fitness testing and training using the existing facilities in the laboratories for external clients from the educational institutions, sport associations and industry.
  • Conduct research on physical activities.
  • Conduct contract research.

i. Objectives
  • To conduct research and development activities related to IC development, which may include memory software development for IC design, algorithmic VLSI, and other relevant applications.
  • To build a research culture and expand research community in the area.
  • To collaborate with educational/research institutions and various industries in terms of IP creation, relevant market-driven, business-related projects and any consultancy thereof.
  • To develop research partnership with public and private sectors / institution / industries nationally and / or internationally to produce high impact journal article  / books.
  • To provide research-led training courses for the faculty’s academicians and students to learn, nurture and hone their research skills as well as competencies.
ii. Vision Statement

To become an active and dynamic research centre in carrying out research and application development in the areas of IC research and developmentwith the goal of solving scientific and engineering problem.

iii. Rationale and Research Plans

The main aims of the Centre include continuous improvement of the quality of scientific / industrial research, the development of techniques based on research and the latest scientific / industrial discoveries and greater international visibility. This research group aims to focus on researching techniques on the technological development of IC design and development which may include memory software systems in collaboration with academic partners as well as various industry players. Its research will also involve investigation on the electronics (hardware), firmware, application development and associated memory software with the purpose to incorporate into wide spectrum applications.With this in view the centre therefore will:

  • conduct research and training related to embedded systems (hardware and software solutions) and IC design and development;
  • conduct joint-research activities with research institutions / industry partners;
  • provide consultancy to industries and the communityby providing solutions to the industrial needs in the stated areas;
  • provide opportunities for staff to apply their knowledge and skills to practical real life problems; and
  • provide opportunities for staff and students to enhance their knowledge and skills through experiential learning.

Centre for Integrated Circuit Research and Development

Research Centre Leader - Dr. Poh Tze Ven

Term and reference:

  • Promote research culture amongst staff.
  • Encourage staff to establish collaboration with other institutions locally or abroad.
  • Provide consultancy and training services to educational/research institutions and various industries.
  • Assist staff in negotiation of terms of research with third parties as well as sourcing for funds for such activities.
  • Administer and monitor progress of research and development activities.
v. Operation and Activities

The Centre shall explore potential research topics and ideas with academic institutions and industry partners.

Activities in the Centre include:

  • Research project with research partners or industry partners on IC cells design and development and memory software development.
  • Training of staff and students or outsiders on the development of embedded systems for industrial as well as home application.
  • Nurturing interest of students in the area of memory software development through training students to develop embedded systems in mini projects and final year projects for industrial and other relevant applications
vi. Funding, Facilities and Equipment

Members of the centre will apply for research or industry funding from the Malaysian Government or International research grants to conduct it activities. Apart from that, centre will source for software and equipment sponsorship from the industry. The Centre will use the existing facilities which house suitable instruments, experimental setups and engineering equipment with computers that are loaded with licensed software within the Main Campus.
