Bachelor of Science in Architecture (Honours)

Architecture is the art and science of building. The word 'architecture' was derived from Latin word 'architecture' and Greek word 'arkitekton', which mean 'master builder'. As a trained professional and very often the lead player in building projects, an architect is entrusted with transforming the client's need for space into reality. An architect is usually involved in all aspects related to the design, construction and commissioning of a building project. In the private sector, an architect may be employed in an architectural consultancy firm. After gaining suitable experience, he/she may decide to set up his/her own private practice.

The Bachelor of Science in Architecture (Honours) programme serves as Part I of the architectural education on the pathway towards the registration as Architect. The programme is designed to cater for students who wish to pursue the career of architecture and practice as architects in Malaysia. For candidates without the requisite pre-university qualification, they may choose to complete the Diploma in Architecture programme first before they are promoted to the degree study on credit transfer.

Candidates for architectural studies are expected to have an interest in art and design, an ability to appreciate form and space, a love for heritage and culture, as well as an ability to appreciate all the five human senses. Students in this programme go through lectures, tutorials, laboratories, group discussions, seminars and studio works in which they learn draughting skills both manually and by using computer aided design (CAD) tools. Subjects covered in the programme include Design Studios, Design Theory, Construction Technology and Materials, Structural Studies, Environmental Science and Building Services, History of Architecture, Building By-Laws, Digital Modelling, Architectural Drawing etc.

Career Prospects:
Graduates of this programme can be employed as architectural assistants, who normally assist professional architects in design and droughting activities. This Part I degree also provides on effective pathway for further studies in architecture leading to Part II professional master programme in architecture, which will enable the graduates to be registered professional architects upon the passing of the LAM Part Ill Professional Examinations, after a minimum of two years working experience in a registered architectural practice.

This programme is designed to produce and develop graduates:

  1. Produce graduates with requisite knowledge and skills in architectural design work, building technological practices, architectural drafting, culminating in small projects design, preparation of presentation and working drawings required for project realisation
  2. Provide students with technical and leadership skills in planning, coordination and implementation of architectural projects from inception to completion within the architectural and constructional environment.
  3. Develop students' creativity and competency in problem solving and critical thinking pertaining to architecture and its associated interdisciplinary matters with independence of thought and decision making capabilities.
  4. Develop students' interpersonal and communication skills that are vital for teamwork within the architecture profession and the project teams to enable them to work effectively either independently or as a member of a team.
  5. Produce graduates who possess strong professional ethical values and positive attitude that will gear them towards higher professional and academic qualifications in the field of architecture.
  6. Produce graduates who will endeavour to apply entrepreneurial skills to successfully run and manage their own architectural practice in a professional manner and thereby inculcating lifelong learning.

Upon completion of the programme, the graduates should be able to:

  1. Apply design knowledge, technical/graphical communication and building technology concepts and principles to achieve the objectives and goals of design and construction organisations.
  2. Apply both manual and digital drawing skills and other media in the preparation of design work, preparation of presentation and working drawings needed for project realization.
  3. Apply scientific and technological knowledge, analytical and critical thinking skills to define and develop integrated design solutions creatively, incorporating values of sustainability, art and culture within the environment and society of Malaysia.
  4. Demonstrate effective oral, written and graphic communication skills in the course of executing projects that involved coordination with other members of the project team.
  5. Display strong team spirit with sound understanding of responsibility and liability in the course of professional duties.
  6. Practise strong professional ethical values in their work in line with principles and practices pertinent to management of design processes, site work and marketing operations.
  7. Use information resources to acquire new processes and skills to inculcate life-long learning and pursue a higher level of study for career development.
  8. Demonstrate good management and entrepreneurship skills through an understanding of contractual procedures in order to assist in managing an architectural practice and marketing operations.
  9. Demonstrate leadership qualities which are necessary for executing projects that require collaboration among team members.
