TAR UMT - Industrial Collaborations

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) has entered into various collaborations and partnerships with specialist organisations and institutions to provide students with the latest industry-based applications, technical know-how and software leading to professional and technical certifications which are incorporated into the relevant programmes. Some of the projects undertaken with our prominent industry partners are:-

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) is a member of the Microsoft Dreamspark program.

This partnership enables TAR UMT faculty staff and students to work with the industry specialists from Microsoft Malaysia on latest technology updates, train the student training and be well-versed in project development using Microsoft technology.

This partnership has not only equipped TAR UMT students with IT technical knowledge, but also people skills and organisational skills that are very important for their future undertakings.

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) is a registered Cisco Networking Academy whereby TAR UMT students can access the latest computer network curriculum as well as Cisco industry-relevant hands-on experience on network equipment and real-world networking problem solving skills.

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) now known as TAR UMT is recognized by Cisco Networking Academy as the Best Cisco Networking Academy 2010 and 2012, and was awarded the Most Outstanding Partnership in 2011. Lecturers of TAR UMT were also awarded the Instructor Excellence Expert in 2011.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences and Computing of the University College has been working closely with MIMOS Malaysia on the areas of IC layout fabrication and testing. Under this arrangement, MIMOS provides the necessary laboratory facilities for the MIMOS-TAR UMT joint development of the macrocells for gates and flip-flops for Tanner tools pdk at MIMOS.

An MOU has also been signed with MIMOS whereby MIMOS provides facilities and equipment to fabricate integrated circuits (ICs) for students’ work. The MOU also provides the transfer of knowledge and skills, and joint development of macrocells. The students have successfully designed and fabricated the chips in collaboration with MIMOS. One of the collaborative efforts with MIMOS includes the involvement of academic staff in the 2 1/2 months hands-on industrial attachment at MIMOS Berhad, Technology Park Malaysia.

Under the Corporate Governance Lecture Series, governance experts are brought in to deliver talks on pervasive and current issues on corporate governance for students and lecturers at least once every semester. The Corporate Governance Lecture Series provides a platform for dialogue on corporate governance issues amongst practitioners, University College staff and students.

As a Novell Academic Training Partner (NATP), Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) students are provided with the relevant knowledge on Linux Operating System and are prepared for the Novell Certified Linux Professional (NCLP) certification.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between NCL Solutions and TAR UMT on SUSE Linux Innovation Club Evangelist (SLICE) Linkage and Collaboration, thereby enabling TAR UMT students to be in the domain of SUSE Linux members club, to be eligible for various competitions and internships for more practical exposure and learning.

TAR UMT also won the Best NATP 2009 Award which was presented at the NATP Summit on 30 September 2009.

This Taxation Lecture Series aims to provide industry perspective on current emerging taxation topics to Faculty of Accountancy, Finance & Business (FAFB) students and staff.

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) now called Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) joined hands with the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy and International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) in successfully organising microelectronics workshops and training on integrated circuit design language for hardware synthesis and FPGA chip implementations. Organised for the very first time in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region, the workshops were conducted at TAR UMT and IIUM. The workshops attracted the participation of educators and researchers from countries in Asia Pacific.

Collaboration with Altera Penang resulted in implementing the “Train the Trainers” Scheme whereby Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) works with Altera to provide training for lecturers of Malaysian universities and colleges on Altera Advanced Quartus-II FPGA tool.

The organisation of the collaborative activities is now mostly through MDeC or Dreamcatcher.

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) and FIABCI Malaysia co-organised annual seminars delivered by industry leaders and practitioners to share their knowledge and expertise with the students.

The MoU between Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) and International Centre of Cake Artistry Sdn Bhd (ICCA) marks the beginning of a strategic relationship between TAR UMT and ICCA to collaborate on the teaching and training of skill-based courses on cake-baking and cake-decoration at the University College.

This programme is exclusively for the Faculty of Accountancy, Finance & Business (FAFB) students. It is an initiative developed jointly by KPMG and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) with the objective of imparting good communication, leadership and relationship skills (commonly termed as “soft skills”) to help to mould students to be well-rounded and positive-minded individuals.

The signing of MoU between Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) and MRCA is to activate a series of collaborative initiatives aimed at enabling the transfer of industry knowledge, technology and best practices to benefit TAR UMT students so as to develop employment-ready graduates for the retail industry.

The establishment of the room was made possible with Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) emerged top in the campus category in the 2011 OSK Investment Challenge (‘OSKIC’) Competition. The room provides a venue for University College students to expand their knowledge in the area of investments.

This room is equipped with NV Advisor, a gaming portal/software which provides a platform for both staff and students to have hands-on experience in analyzing the fundamentals of each company listed on Bursa Malaysia, access updates of each company’s data and applying this knowledge in predicting future stock prices movement.

A collaborative programme initiated with the aim of preparing relevant bachelor degree students for their future employment in this competitive work environment. It consists of a series of workshops which include presentation skills, dining etiquette, resume writing and an interview workshop among others.

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) is a MSC status Company under Institution Higher Learning user type. TAR UMT works closely with MDeC on development knowledge and human capital in ICT areas.

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) now called Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) was awarded the Most Engaging IHL in Industry-Academia Collaboration 2012 with other 5 IHLs.

TAR UMT was awarded by MOHE then (now MOE) as the Industry Centre of Excellent (iCOE) in ICT cluster in 2013.

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) now called Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) is a member of the IBM Academic Initiative Program since 2010.

TAR UMT’s role is to support IBM in building a pipeline of skilled students for the IT jobs of tomorrow, especially on promoting skills around open standards-based software, together with new skills for the 21st century.

IBM provides, at no charge, the academia with access to thousands of IBM’s leading-edge software and industry-proven course materials (worth millions of dollars), remote access to IBM hardware and training on IBM’s technologies to assist the academia in enhancing the skills profile of their students.

TAR UMT was chosen by IBM as a Centre of Excellence in July 2011, to excel and help move IBM’s state-of-the-art software technology among TAR UMT community to meet the increasing demand for information technology professionals.

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) joined MyUniAlliance - Google Web Academy since July 2012.

Under this alliance, TAR UMT equips students with the latest Google technology in creating and developing E-commerce websites via Online Business Professionals Program. TAR UMT also participated in the latest technology development programmes such as Cloud Professionals Program and HTML5 Developer Program using Google Web Academy curriculum and content.

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) is in the MyUniAlliance-SAP programme. The Faculty of Applied Sciences & Computing (FASC) Business Information Systems students and Enterprise Information Systems undergraduates are equipped with SAP and industry-relevant knowledge during their course of study.

Through this initiative, TAR UMT receives the following three pillars of support;

  • free licenses for SAP software to be used for classroom teaching purposes.
  • Curriculum support through extensive educational materials developed by professors around the world through the SAP University Alliance Program.
  • Training provided by SAP to the University College to equip staff and lecturers with the latest SAP knowledge to pass on to their students

The Employers Forum was first initiated in 2005 and since then, it has been organized based on an annual basis to foster closer links with employers in commerce and industry as partners in education and training.

The principal objective of the Employers Forum is to provide a platform for dialogue between the University College, employers in commerce and industry, and also the professional bodies to discuss issues and challenges pertaining to human capital development and education. Feedback from Employers assists the University College to formulate appropriate education and training strategies to provide dynamic learning and training for Universisty College students and graduates.

The University College constantly strengthens its linkages with business and industry to provide students and graduates with opportunities to enhance their career prospects. Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) Career Fair that is held annually serves as a platform to provide prospective employers from various industries with the opportunity to source for employees among TAR UMT graduates and students.

Started in 2001, the Career Fair has seen the participation of companies from Malaysia, Singapore and China as well as multinational corporations. The Career Fair has garnered great responses from employers, and the high number of participating companies every year demonstrates that TAR UMT graduates and students are very much sought after by employers.
