TARCians Explore Global Horizons

Between 9-18 June 2024, 20 TAR UMT students went on a project-based study trip to Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) in Japan. The students currently pursuing their honours degree in construction management and economics, quantity surveying, real estate management, architecture and interior architecture collaborated with SIT students for the ‘Scan to BIM’ project. The project aimed to create a 3D BIM model using Revit by processing point cloud data collected from laser scanning.

In addition to their study trip to SIT, the group of students also had the privilege of visiting the Takenaka Research & Development (R&D) Institute, which is the world’s largest state-of-the-art R&D institute. And to conclude the trip on a high note, the group also took the chance to visit and explore several notable Japanese tourist attractions.

“This is the second year of our study trip to SIT. The trips to SIT are very useful for our students as the experience enriches and enhances students’ hands-on learning on advanced Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies. This is important and relatable as TAR UMT’s BIM Centre is currently the only Tekla Authorised Training Centre by Trimble in Malaysia, specialising in Tekla software, an industry-leading structural BIM software. On top of having access to the latest BIM technology on campus, study trips such as this widen our students’ horizons as although they are working on a common area of study, the experience of working with peers from different backgrounds is very valuable in itself. What’s more, their visits to interesting places out of campus which are related to what they are studying will allow them to expand their views and thoughts and this is part of providing TARCians with the Beyond Education learning experience,” explained Ir Han Seng Kong, Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment (FOBE).
