Wong Jing Hui won a Bronze award for the country in the International Certification of Digital Literacy (ICDL) Asia 2025. The Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) student competed in the Business track, which focuses on the strategic and practical application of digital tools in business scenarios. Her latest achievement follows her earlier success in August this year, where she emerged as the national winner, earning the opportunity to compete in the Asia Pacific region.

The ICDL Asia Digital Challenge is a premier competition that recognises and promotes digital literacy and skills among students across Asia. This year’s challenge attracted more than 13,000 students from over 230 schools and institutions across 13 territories, including Bhutan, Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Recalling her journey in the competition, she said, “It was my lecturer who encouraged me to join the challenge. As a person who is always open to learn new things, I told myself, why not! Even if I did not win anything, I would still take away new knowledge and experience in digital skills. So, winning at the national level and then emerging as a Bronze winner were totally unexpected for me.”

For the continental level of the competition, Jing Hui had to create a single-page website demo to promote an eco-friendly product related to sustainability. Her eco-friendly product is Meal Mate, a biodegradable food container with a tracker to ascertain the freshness of the food in the container. There are also compartments for users to separate the food that they would consume immediately from the food they plan to consume later. To appeal to the younger generation, Jing Hui’s concept also included different container designs and attractive bags to place the containers in. She also included a product feature video, special social media promotions and customer testimonials on her webpage.

Lacking exposure in IT and digital skills, Jing Hui had a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Accountancy, Finance and Business (FAFB), and the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology to help with her project for the challenge. “I really wanted to work on this sustainable food container for the simple reason of witnessing how many plastic containers students like me throw away after take-out. When I shared my idea with my lecturers, they said there was nothing special about it. So, we brainstormed more to see how to enhance the unique features of the food container. I am grateful to my team of lecturers, as they did not persuade me to consider other products. They respected and supported my views and worked with me to enhance my product. By allowing me to work on my own idea, presenting it to the judges was not very challenging because I came up with the concept and I was able to present my thoughts confidently,” Jing Hui added.

Although the competition was not directly related to her degree programme, Jing Hui came away with valuable experience and exposure. “Today’s world requires us to have knowledge and exposure in various related fields, especially digital skills. I am glad to have competed in this competition because it allowed me to learn and explore digital tools. This would be very good for my portfolio, proving that my experience and knowledge are not only in commerce but also in digital skills,” said the young achiever who completed her secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Stella Maris (Pudu).
