7 February 2025 is a special day for TAR UMT where the TARC-Tan Sri Khaw Kai Boh Student Loan Fund was established. The latest student loan fund with a value of RM2 million was formalised with a signing ceremony between Prof Dato’ Indera Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT and Mr Khaw Chay Tee, son of the late Tan Sri Khaw Kai Boh. Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, Chairman of TAR UMT’s Board of Governors, and TAR UMT Alumni Council was present to witness the signing ceremony.

“Tan Sri Khaw Kai Boh was a very important leader for this University as he gave his best efforts and hard work to ensure the then TAR College came into being. I am sure that if Tan Sri Khaw was alive today, he would be very forthcoming and happy to establish this student loan fund. Having said this, all of us at TAR UMT are grateful to Mr Khaw Chay Tee for establishing this special student loan fund in honour of his late father. This important effort in a way is a continuation of Tan Sri Khaw’s legacy of serving the needy with the gift of affordable and quality tertiary education,” expressed Tan Sri Chan.

“When my father (Tan Sri Khaw) was given the task of laying down the foundations for the establishment of TARC in 1968, it would have been one of his greatest challenges as the institution’s primary objective was to equip its graduates with the necessary qualifications and skills to obtain employment. Were he alive today, he would have been so proud to see the objective fulfilled and TAR UMT is now a renowned institution in Malaysia for producing top-quality and industry-ready graduates,” said Mr Khaw.

The TAR UMT Student Loan Fund, an interest-free revolving loan fund, was established in 1979 to assist needy and deserving students to pursue and complete their tertiary education. Its funding comes from monetary donations contributed by alumni, corporations, foundations, philanthropists and well-meaning Malaysians from all walks of life.

“Since the loan fund’s inception, 16,422 TARCians have benefitted from the financial assistance to pursue their tertiary education at TAR UMT. The addition of the TARC-Tan Sri Khaw Kai Boh Student Loan Fund will further renew our commitment in carrying on the legacy he (Tan Sri Khaw) has left for us,” added Tan Sri Chan.

Today, there are 134 student loans under the TAR UMT Student Loan Fund.
