TAR UMT’s A-Level student Chiu Bee Chien made the country proud after the team he was a part of won a Bronze medal in the International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO) 2026 competition held on 2 – 9 August 2026 in Saudi Arabia.

Malaysia’s four-man team, including Bee Chien, returned home with one silver and three bronze medals from the competition, a global platform for scientific exchange, youth engagement, and international cooperation. The 2026 edition featured top students from 19 countries across the globe.

Organised with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), INSO aims to promote scientific excellence, international cooperation and global interest in nuclear science and peaceful applications of technology.

On his accomplishment, Bee Chien said: “The competition itself was a little challenging, especially the theory section where we needed to solve five hypothetical questions within five hours. Winning the bronze medal did not just make me feel that I contributed to the country, but also renewed my passion for science and mathematics.

“I would have to credit my father for this result – he was the one who encouraged and nurtured my love for science and mathematics since I was a little kid by buying me science-related books and supporting me in any science-related competitions. Since then, I was totally fascinated because with the right knowledge, you can explain most real-world phenomena and uncover many mysteries of nature using just paper and equations. That feeling of wanting to understand the world truly captivated me.”

What allowed Bee Chien, a former Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kota Kemuning student, to excel on the global stage was the support from his lecturers throughout his preparation stage.

“My lecturers ensured that I was always on top of my lessons and assignments. That may sound like a small thing, but having my studies well taken care of is what allowed me to have more time to practice, prepare, and focus on INSO 2026,” said Bee Chien, who is looking forward to completing his A-Levels at TAR UMT and passing with flying colours.
