Everyone deserves a second chance, even juvenile offenders.

Which is why a fund-raising campaign organised by TAR UC in partnership with non-profit organisation Malaysian CARE channeled all its collection to the construction of a music room at a juvenile prison in the Klang Valley.

Held over a 3-day period by Bachelor of Public Relations (Hons) Year 2 students from 5 – 7 April 2022, X-perience Campaign 2022 aimed to create awareness and educate the public on the importance of second chances for young offenders in Malaysia.

This successful event raised RM10,755.56 in donations, which went towards funding the construction of the music room at the Pusat Koreksional Puncak Alam and purchase of new musical instruments and equipment. The music room will serve as a platform to cultivate new skills and creative passion amongst the young offenders, allowing them to share their stories via the power of music.

Over 800 attendees came to X-perience Campaign 2022, which featured a variety of exciting on-ground activities such as booth games, virtual exhibition, and live performances. The highlight of this event was the sharing sessions by ex-offenders Mr Oyent Hazryl and Mr Muhammad Hafizi, whose stories and life experiences managed to captivate the audience and drive home the importance of giving second chances.

"Discrimination, rejection and unequal treatment from society has overshadowed young offenders’ true potential. Through this campaign, we want to open doors for young offenders by changing the way society perceives them.

“The success of X-perience Campaign 2022 is also a success of the Beyond Education philosophy. By working with external parties such as Malaysian CARE, we students learned to be more aware of our surroundings and take up responsibilities to tackle the social issues in the community. This has a profound impact in building the character of students and shaping them to be more wholesome and responsible citizens,” said Su Kai Liang, Vice President, X-perience Campaign 2022 in his closing remarks.
