Taking their passion for wushu to the next level, 10 TARCians who are also members of the Kung Fu Recreational Club at TAR UMT garnered a total of 17 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals at the International Wushu Tournament and Online Hero Wushu Competition 2022. The online competition was held from 2 – 15 October 2022 while the physical tournament was held from 15 – 16 October 2022. The overall number of participants were as many as 900 athletes grouped in 150 teams from countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, China and Malaysia.

Eight TARCians participated in the online competition while two others took part in the physical tournament. Below is the list of their achievements:

Both the online and physical competitions require participants to exhibit their moves in accordance to the specific categories.

For Je-Lin who is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Marketing, the whole experience of participating in the tournament was satisfying and rewarding. “I love wushu and I was able to learn more about wushu when I started studying at TAR UMT. As the current Secretary of the Kung Fu Recreational Club, the experience I have gained from this club is very rewarding for me, including my results in this tournament. Winning the medals is a good confidence booster considering that I only practiced wushu for about three months. I really appreciate the teamwork and sportsmanship from my team members especially during this competition. We had a great time helping each other record the videos for the competition and discussing how to improve our moves. And I was really thrilled to see some of my team members who attended the physical event and cheered for me,” she shared.

On his experience of the physical tournament, Wai Yen said: “Each participant was required to exhibit their moves within 60 - 90 seconds, so it was a very tense moment as I needed to ensure all my moves were accurate and clear for the judges to see. To pull this off, I had a lot of practice with the other club members. I had a very tight schedule during the preparation for this tournament as it was also the period to prepare for semester examinations. But I learned how to manage my schedule properly - time management is very important to not only have an active and balanced life but to also achieve all my goals and aspirations. I am grateful for this experience and winning these medals will add value to my portfolio.”
