TAR UMT Choir, Voichestra with their mock cheque as Second Prize winners.
TAR UMT Choir, Voichestra brought home the Second Prize along with a RM2,000 cash award at the Pertandingan Koir Kemerdekaan IPT 2025, organised by Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) at the Auditorium, Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara Perak, Ipoh, on 21 August 2025.
This was the first time UniKL organised a choir category in conjunction with its annual Arts Festival, which featured 11 different categories. For the choir category, TAR UMT’s Choir and Quest College Choir were the only external choir groups competing with nine groups from various UniKL branches. Each group was required to perform one patriotic song and one popular Malay song within a maximum duration of 10 minutes. All the choirs showcased strong stage performance skills and received enthusiastic cheers from the audience.
This latest achievement marks the 28th award that Voichestra has won in the past 21 years since the society’s establishment, and also the first time the Choir group has won a monetary prize. In addition, this was a milestone achievement, as the competition required only students to perform without lecturers on stage. Notably, it was also the first time that it was conducted by choir member Kendrick Foo Lok Tim, a Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Information Security student. He was guided in developing his conducting skills by the choir conductor and advisor, Ms Ang Yaw Feng, a senior lecturer from the Faculty of Communication and Creative Industries (FCCI), who also closely monitored the choir’s progress throughout the one-and-a-half-month training period.
Although there was limited time for training, the choir members trained diligently to master two new songs, “Setia” and “Alamak Raya”. Their efforts culminated in a captivating stage performance, further enhanced by creative movements choreographed by Koh Jia Ying, a Diploma in Graphic Design.
