As part of the ongoing partnership between TAR UMT and Guizhou Polytechnic of Construction (GZPC), TAR UMT students were part of a seven-day student exchange programme for the 2024 China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week, held in Guizhou, China, which commenced on from 19 August. This prestigious event is a vital platform for fostering international academic exchange, cultural understanding, and collaboration among ASEAN and Chinese educational institutions.

One of the key highlights of the programme was the Building Information Modeling (BIM) Competition, in which two Diploma in Quantity Surveying students, Ng Shin Bei and Teo Wen Wei, claimed the first prize, showcasing their advanced skills and innovative approach to building design.

The duo was tasked with developing a six-storey teaching building using the BIM software. This project showcased the students’ creativity, as they had to integrate both design and functionality within a limited timeframe. The result impressed the judges with its accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail.

Reflecting on the challenges, Shin Bei shared, "I had to produce a dynamic 3D functional view with visually appealing models, but I had only 4 hours to complete it. So, I practised consistently to improve both my efficiency and accuracy. I also focused on finding how to reduce the time spent to complete the model. This allowed me to allocate more time for checking and adjusting the project, ensuring it met the competition's requirements," she added.

The students also learnt that such competitions are of certain standards. “The other teams demonstrated advanced techniques and set rigorous standards, offering a benchmark for improvement. We observed their advanced techniques and rigorous standards. Such observation was beneficial as we learnt which areas we can improve on and better adapt our skills to increase the quality of our work,” Wen Wei added.

Besides the competition, Shin Bei and Wen Wei also enjoyed exploring Guizhou's rich cultural and technological heritage, visiting its Virtual Simulation Intelligent Construction Training Centre, Urban and Rural Planning Exhibition Hall, and 600-year-old Ancient Town.
