Dinner Served with a Purpose at TAR UMT

The Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman filled with TARCians and well-wishers who added to the vibrancy of the dinner.

 

The TARCian Alumni Association (TAA), one of the alumni bodies of TAR UMT hosted the 10th edition of the TAR UMT Appreciation cum Student Loan Fund Raising dinner on 4 May 2024 at the Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur Campus. This annually-held dinner which commenced since 2012 is one of the yearly initiatives of TAA to help raise funds for TAR UMT’s Student Loan Fund as well as for the continuous development of TAR UMT.

Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, Chairman of the Board of Governors of TAR UMT and of TAR UMT Alumni Council was present to grace the event alongside Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, member of the Board of Trustees, TARC Education Foundation, Mr Troy Chan Gwo Haur, President of TAA, Mr Yee Wing Peng, Organising Chairman cum Deputy President of TAA and Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT.

In his welcome address, Mr Yee Wing Peng took the opportunity to appreciate his lecturers who have helped him during his time at the institution. He also added, “In organising this dinner, I was able to reminisce the unified TARCian spirit again. Many alumni have come forth to provide financial support and donations, and also a number of TARCians who are well-known celebrities have come forth to entertain us tonight.” He also announced that this year’s dinner successfully raised RM228,000 worth of funds to benefit TAR UMT’s Student Loan Fund. 

Mr Troy Chan reiterated TAA’s dedication to serving the TARC community. “TAR UMT holds a special place in our hearts as our alma mater, and we believe in uniting TARCians in solidarity. In addition to this annually held dinner, TAA also organises the yearly held TARCian Run and TARCian Unity Golf to help raise funds for our alma mater. Besides financial support, we also give back to our alma mater by providing job opportunities to the younger TARCians who are just beginning to grow their careers and also by organising relevant talks, seminars and workshops for TAR UMT students,” he further added.

Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy in his speech, said: “With over 300,000 alumni, there’s much more we can achieve together. I encourage our alumni to come back from time to time and continue supporting TAR UMT. And to our dedicated team of staff, your efforts are part of the University’s excellence. Thank you for giving your best for TAR UMT.”

Another highlight of the evening was the screening of the trailer for The Story of TARCians, a special docudrama produced by TAR UMT and well-supported by the alumni associations of TAR UMT. Prof Ir Dr Lee was excited to share about the trailer as he mentioned, “We have a rich history to tell and we see that the TARCian story will be well-shown in a docudrama setting. Post-production is currently ongoing and we can expect the film to be ready for viewing by mid-November. It is in our plan to have this movie screened in local theatres.”

The dinner attracted approximately 1,000 attendees comprising TAR UMT alumni, sponsors, supporters and staff. Throughout the dinner, attendees were entertained by lively performances. On top of this, the signature lucky draw for TAR UMT staff at the end of the dinner ensured the night ended on a high note. Cash prizes totaling RM9,940 were given out with the grand prize totaling RM4,000.
