Honesty is the Best Policy

If someone were to lose an expensive phone, such as an iPhone, that person would probably have to   embrace the worst and possibly lose the phone forever. However, this was not the case when an incident like that happened in TAR University College recently.

When a Diploma in Business Studies (Marketing), Year 2 student, Beh Huai Jun, found an iPhone in the Cyber Centre one afternoon, without missing a beat, he called the owner’s father and handed the phone to him personally an hour later.

Huai Jun did not know the owner’s identity, but after some quick thinking, he scrolled down the phone list and found the number of the owner’s father, which he promptly called and returned the phone to.

The owner’s father was thankful and impressed by Huai Jun’s exemplary action. He wrote to TAR University College praising the institution for having such an honest student.

After the news had spread, Associate Professor Ms Say Sok Kwan, Dean of the Faculty of Accountancy, Finance and Business invited Huai Jun for a chat and praised him for his honest deed.  Ms Say commended him for his effort and she believes that this act will instil in others the importance of being honest.

When asked why he did it, he said: “I felt it was the right thing to do. If I had been in the owner’s shoes, I would have been petrified by the lost. Besides that, I too, would want my phone to be returned to me if I had lost it”.

For Huai Jun, being honest is a habit that was cultivated at home. “Ever since I was young, I was taught by my parents to be helpful, kind and respectful towards others. This has been a practice instilled by them throughout the years and it has become my second nature. I believe that those who do good would be blessed in return. Therefore, I would encourage others to be honest and to help others.”
